Changing your Magento Favicon

Posted on: 25th May 2010 By: Robert Kent 4 Comments

Its something that is so small yet so significant. The favicon. The label of your store. The identity of your website hangs on this small 16×16 square image. Without it you are nothing but a default magento website.

This tutorial will show you how to swap your favicon on your store in the 1.4.0.1 version of magento. It’s really easy and only requires a few small file replacements. Here’s how you do it…

First of all, get yourself a nice favicon – you can do this in many different ways and the most commonly used favicon is based on the website logo. This is a good choice as the logo IS your website. To get a favicon either make one yourself in photoshop or go to http://www.favicon.cc/ where you can make and download one online.

Once made you should copy your favicon.ico and paste it into the following places (overwriting as you go):

/ (Your root layer)

/skin/adminhtml/default/your theme/

/skin/frontend/base/yourtheme/

If you paste it into those following areas and upload you should see that your favicon is now active and working like a treat!

Just what I was looking for, took less than five minutes to make the favicon and add it to the site. Thanks…

    No Worries Richard,

Just a quick note -It’s not easier in the later versions of magento – simply use the inbult favicon upload bar in your admin section: system>design>HTML head
